Humans, like any other creature on this earth, have a need to identify themselves. While animals have a more natural way to do that, we tend to use symbols. One of the ways pilgrims use these symbols is in the form of Camino Patches.
They can be attached to clothes but on the Camino, pilgrims usually carry a backpack and backpacks are perfect to attach patches to. Anyone approaching you will see the symbols and recognize you as a Camino Pilgrim. In addition, they sure make your backpack look cool :-).
